Edie Brickells guitar player had the same sound in their hit song... I think he is using a Mutron Envelope Filter. Its definately an Envelope Filter, just not sure of the type. wonder if that is the same model pete townsend uses on goin mobile? the effect does not seem to be used all that much. my only guess is because it so distinct. ? in the late 70's in the Travis Bean and early Tiger years he was using this set up, according to Steve Parish, to get that sound then in the Estimateds. Travis Bean MC500 w/single-coil pickups and fx loop +Mu-Tron III +Mu-Tron Octave Divider +MXR analog delay early '77 Travis Bean MC500 recieves Jerry's first unity-gain buffer/fx loop jack combo, placing all effects in front of Jerry's gtr vol. knob. 05/77. 1 (silverface)Twin Reverb as pre-amp > McIntosh MC2300 power amp > 3 JBL 2x12's; BF Twin as reserve backup head. If you are looking to replicate it, there are several places to look for the Mu-Tron III - Obviously an original, which aren't in production anymore, are pretty scarce and pricey. The inventor, Mike Beigel left Mu-Tron after HAZ laboratories purchased the outfit. I believe Beigel took his circuit design with him. Mu-Tron, however, carried on and offers a technically different envelope filter (from a circuit-design standpoint) under the same name: http://www.mu-tron.com/ Beigel still sells some of his original Mu-Tron products and lab models: http://www.mu-tron.org/ He also started Electro-Harmonix and offers a modern day version of the Mu-Tron III under the original design specs: http://www.ehx.com/EHx2/Default.asp?q=f&f=%2FCatalog%2F19_Filters%2F09_Q-Tron wonder if that is the same model pete townsend uses on goin mobile? the effect does not seem to be used all that much. my only guess is because it so distinct. ? Could also be that a the sound is sooo associated with Jerry, a guitarist in another band would avoid it for fear of literally copying another artist. Which makes me wonder why a guy like Lenny Kravitz HASN'T used it yet, because he has no qualms with being shamefully derivative. makes total sense. i just like the sound. i play guitar and it would be cool to play those sounds in my not so pro-band. 8-) I hear ya... I have no problem using a Rotovibe and some phase to get all Hendrix on myself in the basement. |
