(Thu) -this is in a small group of songs I consider primordial; a universal law found in music and in our very genetic makeup since the beginning of time (I say the exact same thing about Discharge and the D-beat. It is in us. We just found it again, but it has always been there). Drums and bass hold the line....an ancient war dance. The guitar leads are busy piercing holes in the sky so everyone can march into oblivion and become primal again. 03-01-69 is right there too 12/1/71 the full suite, it is one i have always loved since i heard it many years ago on the GDH radio show and Phil said it was Ivesian in it's arrangement. a sick breakneck pace as the band splits and seems to be playing 2 different songs simultaneously. 12/10/71 is quite a listen. TOO is played almost in the proportion of Dark Star, with full research into all corners of sonic play, from the thunderous theme down to delicate vamping. The leading drum solo rocks, piano is marvelous, Phil is ON, the whole band smokes. And a Sitting On Top Of The World sandwich? Well, who could argue? And, although teases don't usually tease me, the China tease before GDTR is simply awesome. That's a set for the ages, IMHO. Truckin'> Drums >The Other One> Sittin' On Top Of The World>The Other One> Not Fade Away>Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad> Not Fade Away At its best in '72. 8-22-72. 30 minutes of incredible music! It was my buddy's hundred year hall cd w/ the half hour cryptical>too>reprise that really got me hooked, one of my first gd dl's was 3-28-90 a really crappy lossy set2 from napster days. so that's a sentimental favorite for me. If you like the mellow jams, check 7/29/74's. ---- you know that sound when a guitar pick is slid edgewise down the strings... this TOO starts with a RIPPING sound like that. One of my favorites (intros, at least) has the sound you describe. It is pretty entertaining. The build up out of drums, Garcia sliding his pick, and then Phil drops a patented bomb...not to mention the close encounters space... Date 1/22/78 - Sunday Venue MacArthur Court - University of Oregon Location Eugene, OR Two Bertha [6:27] > Good Lovin' [5:40] ; Ship Of Fools [7:18] ; Samson And Delilah [7:46] ; Terrapin Station [10:50] > Drums [8:06] > The Other One (1)[21:42] > Saint Stephen [7:39] > Not Fade Away [14:31] > Around And Around [8:19] Encore U.S. Blues [5:22] 1/22/78 is a monster, one of those amazing moments and i love when everyone backs off and just let Jerry finally nail the Close Encounters theme he had been playing with most of the Jan 78 tour. Latvala considered this end of 2nd set partial SBD one of his faves, he was especially fond of the Terrapin and has always been in my top 10. the intro to St Stephen still gives me goose bumps before the vocal starts and the band slows the tempo considerably. --- the winterland 10-21-78 is pretty sweet, one of the first lossless I found from nags.net early in my collecting. 1972 may have been the year for the other one, but plenty of post '72 examples that are mighty fine. --- listened to this one in the car today, pretty sick from 10-27-79 d2t04 - He's Gone -> d2t05 - Caution Jam -> d2t06 - The Other One -> d2t07 - Drums -> 10/27/79 the old Cape Cod Coliseum, part of a unique 2 day run in a local ice skating rink, which then became a warehouse after Great Woods replaced it as a summer venue. it was a terrible place to see a show and had no AC or anyplace in the venue where the sound was good. a concrete floor with no seats and bleachers lining the wall. this show sounds so much better on tape than it did at the time. Brent was really start to come around and was smoking on this run. --- 5/12/81 is the dankest example of Brent's dastardly awesome Hammond screaming. They jam out of Space for a little while before Phil starts The Other One proper with his signature bass intro, and right after his bass intro when the rest of the band comes in, Brent just fucking lets that organ HAVE IT. Oh man.... its so sick. You guys really really need to check it out. The copy i have is a soundboard that i got from GDLive im pretty sure, but i do believe there are decent Auds up on the Archive. The whole track isnt that long, but oh man... the organ intro is just absolutely ridiculous. You guys realllllly gotta check this one out. Also another highlight from this 2nd set is a 17+ minute He's Gone thats dedicated to Bob Marley that they jam out real well. The whole 2nd set is just one big face melter. I keep beating a dead horse, but you guys HAVE to check this out if you havent. Please!! You might want to check out 3/29/84 for a nice spanish>other one. the one from 06.22.92 is sick...I call it the "Spanish One" because of the unique way they play the spanish jam into TOO...Worth a listen...Take care... :-D 6/22/92 was so bizarre when i saw it, Jerry was looking like he did on the summer 86 tour and we all had doubts they would make the fall tour. if i remember Jerry was late coming back to the stage and as always the Spanish theme is played by Bobby, and it was like they were tired of waiting for Jerry to return so Bob just started singing the lyrics as Jerry strapped in. i think the back fence had already been ripped down at that point and the Star Lake people just wanted to end the show ASAP. --- Which Other One was better? 8.13.1979 or 10.27.1979? Mighty tough call for me, but I'm gonna go with 10-27. Just because Phil is ripping it up. That, and the prominent cowbell. I need more cowbell! Phil's tone on 8/13 makes a strong case. On first listen I thought I heard an Eleanor Rigby hint from Jerry. For 10/27 the rhythm devils are more in the mix and Brent appears less restrained. Both versions are lovely and space out. In weighing the fullness of the band on 10/27 against the virtuoso performances of both Jerry and Phil on 8/13 Ill cast a vote for 10/27 although I'm not sure the playing field is level to compare the two. 10/27 yields a broader spectrum of data to consider. My initial impression is my vote may be more of a comment on the available source than the performance of the band. I think my impressions may have been swayed by 10-27 having somewhat better sound. So, for me at least, the AUD of 8-13 would be much appreciated. It's tough, but I got to go with 10/27. Phil just TEARS through it with an energy that could light up the Vegas Strip! :w00t: And that Dancin'>Franklin's jam ain't nothing to sneeze at either! --- 9-3-85 not too impressive but the last cryptical, |
