I know a lot of folks are not into 1976, but I really like some of the Samsons from this period, particulary 6-29 in Chicago... Keith and the drummers are a little more funky at this point than in many of the 77 versions. If you give this particular show a try, you'll probably be more drawn to the Playin'>Wheel combo which, IMO, deserves more recognition. The Playin sees Jerry looking for some new riffs in the breakdown.

2/5/78... LONG intro due to Weir's mike failure...very tribal and shredding!

5-15-77 Jerry is ON and really into it. When Bobby sings the "You read about this lion he killed a man with paws!" verse, Jerry shouts out "NO!" in repsonse.

I seem to remember 10/29/77's being a strong one.

rockin' samson 10-30-77 Jerry's hot and his guitar is right up front in the mix, Bobby remembers all the words w/ a powerful performance and Donna's hardly there at all  doesn't get too much better than that.

Shakedown into Samson especially the end of Shakedown where Brent pulls some heavy stuff out the funk bag.

Straight out of my favorite Shakedown. All around smokin' show.

for a different sounding one I'd go with 5/6/90.
